ZICAM - Understanding Zicam Consequences with the Help of a Qualified Zicam Attorney

Matrixx Initiatives first offered Zicam in 1999. Since 2002, the FDA has fielded over 130 complaints regarding the loss of smell, known as anosmia, following the use of Zicam’s nasal swabs and nasal gel products to treat cold symtoms. More than 800 complaints, not forwarded to the FDA, were lodged with Matrixx.

Following a Matrixx audit, the FDA sent a June 16, 2009 letter to the company stating that Matrixx did not adequately warn of associated risks and violated regulations by failing to file a new drug application for Zicam. The FDA warned the public against the use of certain Zicam products.

Matrixx withdrew Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size from the market following the FDA intervention.

Matrixx claims that Zicam is homeopathic yet its main and active ingredient, zinc gluconate, is a recognized drug that has been known for its adverse effect on nasal passage smell receptors since the 1930’s. Zincum Gluconicum is recognized by the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS,) but the HPUS process dictates that homeopathic components be diluted to the point where no single active ingredient remains in a formula. In Zicam, zinc gluconate is active and in greater concentration than homeopathic remedy recommendations. By labeling Zicam as homeopathic, Matrixx was not required to obtain FDA approval before marketing it.

In 2005, at Zicam.com, Matrixx offered the following facts:

  • “Zinc gluconate, the active ingredient in Zicam Cold Remedy, is a drug”
  • “Zicam Cold Remedy is not an herbal or nutritional supplement”
  • “Zicam Cold Remedy products are regulated by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration”

Understanding the complexity Zicam's claims that it is homeopathic and the consequences of its use is challenging, and a qualified Zicam lawyer can provide crucial insight for those harmed by this unsafe drug.

The loss of smell is debilitating and potentially deadly and comes with inherent risks like the inability to detect dangers such as:

  • gas leaks
  • smoke
  • burning electrical components or appliances
  • spoiled food

Further, the quality of life is adversely affected by being unable to smell:

  • personal body odor
  • flowers, colognes and other pleasant scents
  • enticing food aromas
  • rain and other natural smells
  • life scents like that of a baby, a new car or a puppy

If you or someone you love has experienced the loss of smell or other adverse side effects from the use of Zicam products, compensation for your significant loss may be available.
