REGLAN (metoclopramide) - Protecting Your Rights with the Help of a Qualified Reglan Attorney
The drug metoclopramide was originally marketed under the brand name Reglan by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. It was later sold to, and marketed by, other manufacturers including Schwarz, Alaven, Baxter and A.H. Robins.
Reglan has been prescribed to treat GERD, heartburn and other reflux diseases, diabetic gastro paresis, surgery and chemo-related nausea and vomiting, low milk supply for lactating mothers, IBS, migraines, slow emptying stomach disorders and other afflictions.
As the uses have expanded, so have reported adverse side effects. Today it is known that some of those side effects can be life changing. Common ones include:
- depression
- anxiety
- fatigue
- dizziness, visual disturbances or eye blinking
- restlessness or drowsiness
- abdominal pain
- confusion
- headaches
- fluid retention
- diarrhea
- tremors
- rash, urticaria or bronchospasm - in asthmatic patients
More serious and potentially life-threatening side effects include:
- tardive dyskinesia (uncontrollable movement such as lip smacking, protruding tongue, rigidity, mask-like facial expressions, body jerking)
- neuroleptic malignant syndrome (hyperthermia with muscular rigidity, altered consciousness and autonomic dysfunction – potentially fatal)

On February 26, 2009 the FDA ordered a Black Box warning to be included on Reglan labels to warn against high dosages or long-term use of metoclopramide.
An Indiana woman was prescribed Reglan after contracting food poisoning. Her use of the drug left her permanently disabled. A woman in Missouri contracted tardive dyskinesia following treatment with Reglan for a stomach ailment. The conditions for which the drug has been prescribed vary, but the results are the same.
A March 4, 2009 ruling by the California Supreme Court allows the case of Conte vs. Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to proceed in spite of Wyeth's claims of no liability in the plaintiff’s Reglan-related debilitation. A California Appeals Court had previously ruled that Wyeth could be sued for withholding crucial risk information from generic drug producers. Wyeth appealed to the California Supreme Court based on their claim that they did not manufacture the generic version of Reglan that Ms. Conte was prescribed, but the Court refused to hear Wyeth’s appeal, paving the way for injured parties, like Ms. Conte, to seek retribution.
For those damaged by Reglan, representation by a Reglan lawyer who has intimate knowledge of the complex issues in unsafe drug matters is vital.
