GADOLINIUM - Did you or a loved one develop a serious condition after a recent MRI? The illness you or your loved one developed may have actually been the result of a contrast agent used in the MRI scan.
Gadolinium is a heavy metal used in MRI studies. Individuals who have undergone MRI studies have reported a serious skin disease called Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) that was likely caused by the Gandolinium based contrast agents in the MRI machine. Symptoms associated with NSF include: tightening, swelling, and thickening of the skin, dark or red patches on the skin and reduced flexibility/stiffness in the arms, hands, legs and feet.
In addition, Gadolinium has been linked to kidney disease. In June 2006, the FDA identified Gadolinium as a risk, and in May 2007, the FDA required a boxed warning, which is its strongest safety warning, requiring notice that when Gandolinium based contrast agents are used in an MRI study, there is a “risk for developing a debilitating and a potentially fatal disease known as Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF)”.
