Cylert

CYLERT - Pemoline, sold by Abbott Laboratories as the drug Cylert, was originally approved by the FDA in 1975 as a treatment for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Because the drug was available on the market for so long, many patients believed it was safe; but as it was determined later, Cylert is anything but safe.
In fact, Cylert was taken off the consumer market in 2005, and it is no longer available in the United States. Because of the hepatic toxicity of the drug, patients who take Cylert (which are typically children) are at an increased risk of liver failure. So far it has been blamed for over 20 cases, with death or liver replacement (which typically occurs within four weeks of developing symptoms of liver failure) resulting in 13 of these cases.
Furthermore, according to a petition against the drug that was filed in the late 90’s, Cylert is also responsible for nearly 200 “adverse drug reactions involving the liver”. Again, because children are the most common patients of the drug, most of these reactions involved those less than 20 years of age. Some of the other side effects include insomnia, depression, hallucinations, nausea, and seizures. Vocal outbursts (such as screaming or uncontrollable swearing), bleeding gums, and chest pains are among some of the more serious side effects, though these are quite rare.
If you or a loved one has taken Cylert in the past and suffered liver failure or any other serious condition, Cylert may have been responsible.
