Toxic Substances :: Benzene

BENZENE- C6H6, often abbreviated as Ph-H, is the chemical compound known as Benzene. It is all around you. It is clear and impossible to detect visually. It is used in many common products used daily by people all over the world from paints to synthetic fibers and dyes. Millions of people come into contact with products made with Benzene everyday and yet it is proven to be a very dangerous chemical with severely hazardous effects. People that work directly with Benzene in the production of materials such as detergents, rubber, resins, plastics and solvents are at the greatest risk for the deadly effects of this chemical.

The Environmental Protection Agency labels Benzene as a class A carcinogen. While it is found naturally in the environment and in airborne compounds such as cigarette smoke and gasoline, the biggest threat is from the production of manmade products created with it. While incidental exposure to Benzene from surrounding air is not usually harmful, prolonged exposure around gas stations or other areas where products made with Benzene are used can cause many symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, confusion, tremors, rapid heart rate, and unconsciousness. Ingesting Benzene causes nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, convulsions, and death.

There are many illnesses directly linked to prolonged exposure including respiratory and skin problems, and blood-related illnesses. Benzene causes severe bone marrow damage and is a cause of several types of Leukemia including acute lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), acute myelogenous Leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), chronic myelogenous Leukemia (CML), hairy cell Leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, myelodisplastic syndrome, and multiple myeloma. Benzene causes damage to many major organs including the heart, liver, lungs, and can even cause menstrual problems in women. It has been linked to a rare form of kidney disease in several instances and may be linked to delayed bone formation in children.

There are several tests for Benzene exposure. One is a breath test and the other a urine test, but both must be performed shortly after known exposure. Even without known testing, if you have been diagnosed with any of the above forms of Leukemia, or any other form of cancer, and have reason to believe you have been subject to prolonged periods of exposure to Benzene, you need to consult with an experienced attorney. A lawyer can get you the help you deserve. You deserve help to get through your devastating illness, compensation for your medical needs, and the financial means to keep your family afloat both during your illness and after you can no longer provide for their needs. Please fill out the form below for a free evaluation by a law firm with the expertise and resources to handle these complex and costly to litigate cases.
